First and Foremost we associate our carbon footprint with the way we travel but it’s our total energy requirement that Is of concern 

First and foremost a house should be home but it's the materials used and how it constructed that is questionable, we are talking about passive housing, not an eco-house, the only thing they have in common is the word house 

A house should be constructed in a way that will last many a generation and by doing so you can reduce its embedded energy/ carbon footprint but you should also reduce the energy requirements of the home whether in Florida or Canada.
